Employee Spotlight | Care Assistant, Meadowview

Employee Spotlight: Jen – Meadowview Care Home

Today, we shine a spotlight on Jen, a Healthcare Assistant at Meadowview Care Home, part of Ashberry Healthcare. With her warm personality and passion for enhancing the lives of our residents, Jen embodies the spirit of compassionate care.

How long have you worked here?

Since May 2013, I’ve been a part of the Meadowview family, joining at the age of 18.

What inspired you to become a Healthcare Assistant, and how did you end up working in a care home environment?

Growing up, I often accompanied my mother to care homes where she worked. Witnessing the challenges and rewards of caring for others, especially those with dementia, instilled in me a deep sense of purpose. Initially hired as a housekeeper, I soon realised that my heart was in caregiving, where I could truly make a difference in the lives of our residents.

Have you encountered any challenges in your role, and if so, how do you overcome them?

Certainly, every job has its challenges. In our line of work, dealing with challenging behaviours and situations is not uncommon. However, I’ve learned to approach these moments with empathy and understanding. Dementia can be cruel, but with ongoing training here and a supportive team, we find effective ways to navigate through tricky situations.

What do you find most rewarding about your role?

The most rewarding aspect of my job is seeing the smiles on our residents’ faces. Learning about their life stories, connecting with them on a personal level, and knowing that I’ve made a positive impact on their day brings me immense joy. Building bonds with residents and their families is truly priceless.

How do you ensure that the individual needs of each resident are being met effectively?

We use personalised care plans for each resident, ensuring that their specific needs and preferences are addressed. Communication with residents, colleagues, and families is key in providing holistic care. And by staying updated on any changes in health or preferences. I’m also fully trained as a Team Leader and cover team-leading shifts as and when required.

What are your passions and hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work, I’m very active and enjoy running, weightlifting, hiking and cold-water swimming. Recently, I hiked up mountain Am Basteir on the Isle of Skye, and also one in North Wales called Tryfan. I try to prioritise healthy eating and overall fitness, as it helps me maintain balance in my life.

What does a typical day entail for you as a Healthcare Assistant at our care home?

A typical day starts with a handover, followed by assisting residents with personal care and getting them ready for breakfast. Throughout the day, I continue with personal care tasks, assist with meals, and participate in activities planned by the well-being team. As the day winds down, I ensure residents are comfortable and relaxed before handing over to the night staff.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to pursue a career as a care assistant, especially within the healthcare industry?

My advice would be to embrace the opportunity wholeheartedly. Working as a care assistant is incredibly rewarding, as you build meaningful relationships with residents and witness their joy and gratitude. Don’t hesitate to take the plunge and experience the fulfilment that comes with making a positive difference in someone’s life.

In conclusion, Jen’s commitment to providing compassionate care at Meadowview Care Home exemplifies the values we hold at Ashberry Healthcare. Her dedication to health and well-being extends beyond the care home walls, reflecting her passion for living life to the fullest. Meadowview Care Home is truly fortunate to have Jen as a member of its team, enriching the lives of residents and colleagues.
