102 years of wisdom, a resident spotlight | Engelberg

Meet Vera, a true gem residing at Engelberg since 2018, who at 102 years young, embodies the spirit of resilience and joy.

Born in 1922 in the picturesque town of Wolverhampton, Vera’s childhood was adorned with the sights and sounds of rural life. From her bedroom window, she’d gaze upon rolling hills dotted with cattle, imprinting memories that would last a lifetime.

Education was a passion for Vera, attending Wolverhampton High School where her love affair with numbers flourished. Mathematics became her forte, a skill she still wields effortlessly to this day.

In her professional life, Vera found fulfilment in the world of accounts, a career that complemented her sharp mind and penchant for precision. But it wasn’t all work and no play – Vera was a force to be reckoned with in table tennis, even competing in the Wolverhampton league. And when she wasn’t crunching numbers or acing serves, she could be found wandering the countryside, soaking in the beauty of nature.

What truly sets Vera apart is her infectious sense of humour. Quick-witted and sharp-tongued, she effortlessly spreads laughter wherever she goes, brightening the days of those around her.

At Engelberg Care Home, Vera’s spirit shines bright. She eagerly participates in quizzes, her mind as sharp as ever, often leaving her peers in awe of her knowledge. And let’s not forget her weakness for chocolate – a love that knows no bounds and is sure to earn her a few extra treats from friends and staff alike.

Vera is more than just a resident – she’s a beacon of warmth and wisdom, enriching the lives of everyone she encounters. Engelberg is truly fortunate to count her among its residents, a living testament to the power of resilience and the beauty of a life well-lived.
