Arranging respite care
You can organise respite care in the following ways:
- Via your local authority’s adult social care department which can arrange for a carer’s assessment and needs assessment for your loved one
- Asking friends or family for help
- Direct with a care home that offers respite care, such as ourselves Ashberry Care Homes
- With homecare via a paid carer service
How long can you stay in respite care for?
If you organise respite care through your local authority, they will determine how much respite care you and your loved one qualify for after they undertake a carer’s assessment and needs assessment. How long your loved one can stay in respite care for is decided following these assessments.
Respite care is usually a fairly short amount of time, but this can vary on a case-by-case basis. It may be as short as a weekend or even an afternoon, but can be as long as several weeks. Here at Ashberry, your loved one will stay with us for a minimum of 14 days in respite care.
How often can you get respite care?
How often you can request respite care depends on your needs and the needs of your loved one. This will be outlined following the needs assessment and carer’s assessment you organise via your local authority.
If you organise respite care directly through a care home, it depends on the availability of the home – particularly if an extended stay is required. Contact us today to discuss respite care availability.
When should you book into respite care
You should look to organise respite care before you begin to feel the effects of stress, anxiety and burnout, especially if you are looking for financial support which can take time to work out.
If your loved one is due a medical procedure, recovery can bring additional challenges which respite care can help to manage. Similarly, if you have holiday plans or need to be free on a particular day, you can book respite care ahead of time. Of course, in the event of an emergency, you can also book last-minute respite care.
