Our approach to dementia care

Because there are so many different types of dementia, the symptoms can vary – that’s why there is no one size fits all approach to the care we provide.

Trained and accredited in a range of dementia memory care, our teams are here to support your loved one in a home carefully designed for their care needs. We provide a range of cognitive activities specifically designed for memory recall and our on site dining team prepares and presents food to help those with dysphagia or other swallowing difficulties.

We encourage our residents to make their own decisions about their lives with us. However, with dementia and memory care, we recognise that this isn’t always possible. In these instances, we work closely with you or an approved power of attorney, to provide your loved one with the best possible support, empathy and care.

We use all the latest amenities and care techniques to make sure your loved one feels right at home. We know how tough dementia can be, and we do everything we can to help our residents feel comfortable and relaxed at all times.

Read our guide on the different approaches to dementia care.

We are also proud of our dedicated staff members, such as Becky Webber-James (Activities Co-ordinator at Holmer Court) who was proudly named Dementia Carer of the Year 2023.

What is dementia care?

Dementia care is specialist care offered to those with dementia and other cognitive conditions. Those with dementia often suffer from confusion and can struggle with everyday tasks, which sometimes means they can no longer look after themselves. Care offered in specialist dementia care homes, such as the service we offer at Ashberry Healthcare, is designed to help residents retain their independence for as long as possible.

Care is offered within a safe, understanding and empathetic environment, by staff who are fully trained and experienced in offering care to residents with dementia. Care is personalised and structured, with their preferences and dignity always at the forefront.

Who is dementia care for?

Dementia care is care offered to those who can no longer live independently at home. This includes living with friends or family who may offer them regular care and support, but have difficulty adapting to their changing needs. Dementia care ensures your loved one eats delicious and nutritious food, receives regular medical support and is physically, socially and psychologically supported during a difficult part of their life.

Once your loved one is diagnosed with dementia it can be an exceptionally challenging time, and the care offered in a residential home provides them with the expertise needed to retain their independence.

When is dementia care needed?

Dementia care may be needed following a diagnosis to not only support your loved one, but you too. Dementia can impact someone’s ability to live alone, even with support, which is caused by changes to their memory, behaviour and communication skills.

The more dementia advances, the harder it can be to care for someone, and specialist care helps ensure your loved one’s safety and wellbeing, which also ensures their quality of life. Read our guide about when should someone with dementia go into a care home.

What funding and support is available for dementia care

We predominantly offer affordable dementia care for privately funded residents. However, if the financial situation of your loved one has changed, you may be eligible to receive additional support.
