We have the opportunity to shine a spotlight on Gavin, the Maintenance Manager at Blaenos House. With 15 months of service under his belt, Gavin tells us about his latest projects and brings a heart full of compassion to his role. Beyond his professional duties, Gavin also serves as an on-call firefighter, demonstrating his commitment to the safety and well-being of his community. Let’s dive into Gavin’s journey and learn more about the work he does both within and outside of Blaenos House.

Can you tell us a bit about how you became the Maintenance Manager at Blaenos House?

Gavin: Well, it all started when I stumbled upon the job ad on Indeed while working at an animal feed factory. I’ve always had a knack for general DIY jobs, and when I saw the opportunity at Blaenos House, I knew it was the perfect fit for me.

Outside of work, we hear you’re also an on-call firefighter. What inspired you to pursue that?

Gavin: Ever since I was young, I’ve wanted to become a firefighter. When I saw an ad for the role in Llandovery, I jumped at it, and the rest is history. This Tuesday marks my 20 years in service, a milestone I’m really proud of. I love it, I have my pager on me at all times, I call it my ‘heart’ because I feel incomplete without it on me.

Can you share a memorable experience from your firefighting service?

Gavin: One particularly impactful moment was when a girl was driving a tractor on a hill, she rolled it eight times and ended up breaking her back as well as collapsing one lung. Thank god I managed to get to her in time, the air ambulance arrived and took her off. Even though she broke her back, she survived. She has a son, her son is two weeks younger than my eldest son. They’re in school together. It hit home that I was a part of that. I helped save her life …

What aspect of your job brings you the most pride and fulfilment?

Gavin: One project that stands out to me is the creation of dementia murals within the care home. Seeing the residents’ joy and engagement with the artwork has been incredibly rewarding. It’s a small way to make a big difference in their lives.

Do you have any personal or professional goals you’d like to pursue further?

Gavin: It might take me a couple of years, but I want to build an accessible sensory garden on the lawn for the residents to interact with nature. The scenery is beautiful around here and it would make a world of difference to the residents to be out in the outdoors.

Do you have any advice for aspiring maintenance managers or those looking to make a difference in their communities?

Gavin: My advice would be simple: treat others how you would want to be treated, especially in their old age. Patience, kindness, and empathy can go a long way in making a difference in someone’s life.
