Spotlight on John: Holmer Court's Resident Head Gardener

At Holmer Court in Hereford, we are fortunate to have a resident who brings joy and vitality to our community—John. A happy-go-lucky man with a quick wit and a cheeky sense of humour, John has become a cherished member of our Holmer Court family here.

John’s love for gardening began when he was just 8 years old. As a young boy, he spent countless hours helping his family with their gardens, earning pocket money while developing a passion that has stayed with him throughout his life. He fondly remembers the beautiful garden he grew up in, a place he cherished deeply.

Since joining us at Holmer Court, John has continued to nurture his love for gardening by contributing to our raised vegetable beds. What he loves most about our garden is that it feels like home to him—a true, homegrown garden, not just a showpiece. The garden is where John finds his peace, and his connection to it has only grown stronger since he was awarded the title of ‘Head Gardener.’ We recently honoured him with this title, complete with a plaque, and John couldn’t be prouder. Under his care, our garden has flourished, producing cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, and flowers that bring beauty and fresh produce to our Care Home.

Beyond his gardening expertise, John has made many friends at Holmer Court and enjoys regular visits from his family, who live nearby. He is a proud grandfather of three, with another grandchild expected in January—a new joy on the horizon. John was making a gift for one of his grandchildren while we talked, as shown in the photo.

Before moving to Holmer Court, John had a distinguished career as a manager at British Telecoms, where he dedicated 44 years to national service. In 1949, he enrolled in the army, and later, he married a nurse who became the love of his life. John and his wife enjoyed 43 wonderful years together before she passed away. He speaks of her with deep affection, remembering her as a sister matron who cared for many with the same kindness he now shares with us.

John is an active participant in the events and activities at Holmer Court, always bringing his enthusiasm and humour to everything he does. He was particularly excited about our summer fete in August, looking forward to the festivities with the same anticipation he brings to his gardening.

John’s presence at Holmer Court is a gift to us all. His dedication, humour, and passion for life make our community a warmer, more vibrant place. We are proud to have him as our Resident Head Gardener and as a friend.
