Ashberry Healthcare acquires historic Hereford Nursing Home

Ashberry Healthcare, a leading boutique care provider focused on small community living, has announced their latest acquisition with the purchase of The Weir Nursing Home in Hereford.

The Weir is a grade II listed Georgian mansion and National Trust property, occupied on a 99-year lease. It is situated in extensive and beautifully kept grounds (which remain open to the public) alongside the River Wye.

Ashberry Healthcare will provide their community-focused high-quality residential, nursing and dementia care to the home’s 34 residents – with all existing staff transferring by TUPE to Ashberry Healthcare Ltd. to ensure continuity of care.

The acquisition of the home marks the latest development in Ashberry Healthcare’s ambitious strategic growth plans.

With two other homes in Hereford, The Weir joins Ashberry Healthcare’s high-quality portfolio which supports 270 residents in their eight locations across Staffordshire, Surrey, Cheshire, and Carmarthenshire (Wales).

After proceedings completed last week, The Weir has become the second acquisition undertaken by Ashberry Healthcare since its management buy out in 2020, led by Chief Executive Nigel Denny and Chief Financial Officer, Gary Cottrell.

Ashberry Healthcare will bring to The Weir their track record of exceptional quality – with a group average score of 9.8 on independent review site carehome.co.uk, and award-winning success at their nearby Holmer Court in Hereford. They also have a well-documented success rate in boosting occupancy and profitability of homes for the benefit of local communities.

The provider’s community-centric model will be well suited to The Weir’s size and layout, as staff have the resources and time needed to provide residents with dedicated, personalised care. Ashberry Healthcare prides itself on offering safe, caring environments in this model that balance older people’s independence and enjoyment with exceptional standards of professional care. They will make full use of the home’s beautiful grounds and surroundings, to enhance resident wellbeing and quality of life.

In line with their latest acquisition, Ashberry Healthcare’s model focuses on period properties and country houses with c.40 bedrooms offering smaller community living.

Having restructured its original portfolio, Ashberry Healthcare plans to continue to grow and is seeking more acquisition opportunities to expand.

Ashberry Healthcare’s CEO, Nigel Denny, said:

“This is an exciting milestone for Ashberry Healthcare and we’re delighted to welcome The Weir into our family of homes. Under the 30-year ownership of David Kingham, The Weir and its care team have built a strong local reputation and connections with residents and the local community – it is a privilege to be able to continue that heritage, and we wish David the very best for his well-deserved retirement.

We will build on that legacy with our community-centric, small group living model that offers something different to the local market for people seeking the camaraderie, empowerment, and independence that a smaller home can offer.

I’d like to thank our financing partner, Barclays Bank, who have been tremendously supportive of our development ambitions thus far. We look forward to accelerating our acquisitions over the coming years and building our portfolio.”
