Care Home residents share words of wisdom for their younger selves

At The Weir Nursing Home, we believe that every resident has a story to tell and wisdom to share. Recently, on a beautiful spring day, we had the pleasure of spending time outdoors with some of our residents, listening to their reflections on life and the advice they would give to their younger selves. Their insights are invaluable, offering guidance and inspiration for all generations.

A Life Well Lived: Advice from Our Residents

Simon – "Be sensible and live your life as you want."

Simon, a former farmer, has spent his life working hard. From the age of 11, he cared for 135 cows on their farm, located just over the hill from The Weir. His straightforward yet meaningful advice reminds us of the importance of balance—being responsible while also embracing the life we truly want to live.

Sheila – "Stay young at heart forever and appreciate what you have."

Sheila, a wonderfully glamorous lady, believes that staying youthful is all about mindset. Her words encourage us to hold on to joy, gratitude, and the ability to find happiness in the present moment.

Robin – "Don’t grow old."

While this piece of advice came with a smile, Robin’s words reflect the universal desire to hold onto vitality, curiosity, and a zest for life. It’s a gentle reminder to embrace each day with enthusiasm and to never lose our sense of wonder.

Embracing Life with Kindness

Later in the day, our Wellbeing Coordinator, Michelle, led a flower arranging session, bringing creativity and joy to the home. During this activity, we spoke with Pat, who shared her heartfelt advice: "Always be kind to yourself and others", as kindness can shape the world around you in ways you might never expect.
