Introducing Sue, the devoted Chaplain at Engelberg, our home in Wolverhampton, a new addition to the Ashberry Care Homes family. With boundless compassion and a receptive ear, Sue has been an integral part of the Engelberg community for six years.

Sue’s journey to becoming a chaplain at Engelberg is one marked by profound personal experiences and a deep sense of calling. Previously working in customer service, Sue’s life took a transformative turn in 2006 when she faced a life-threatening illness. It was during this challenging time that she discovered the profound significance of her faith, leading her to re-evaluate her life’s purpose. Subsequently, Sue dedicated years to training and courses at her local church before finding her calling in Chaplaincy.

In her role at Engelberg, Sue’s days are filled with compassion and support for the residents. With a 10-hour contract spread across Thursdays and Fridays, she devotes her time to creating a nurturing environment where residents feel heard and valued. On Thursdays, Sue leads worship services and engages in one-on-one sessions with residents in the music rooms. Fridays are marked by heartfelt conversations and puzzles with residents in their rooms, offering solace and companionship.

Sue’s role extends beyond religious duties; she is a steadfast friend who walks alongside residents on their individual journeys. Recognising the profound losses many residents face, whether it be the loss of a loved one, the loss of independence, or the loss of their life as they know it, Sue provides a safe space for them to explore their thoughts and emotions. Her presence brings comfort to families navigating the transition of their loved ones into care.

“Coming into a Care Home is a lot to navigate, I’m a listening ear for the residents and families to come to terms with where they are in their lives. I’m here for people of all faiths or none at all”. Sue always says to the residents and their families, “They come here to live a good life, they have not come to the home to die”.

For Sue, being a chaplain isn’t about promoting a specific faith but rather about embodying the essence of love and compassion. As a Church of England Christian, she sees her role as an extension of the biblical commandment to “love thy neighbour.” Regardless of faith background, Sue is there to offer unwavering support and understanding.

In her spare time, Sue’s passion for crafts shines through as she lovingly creates personalised cards and bookmarks for residents, brightening their days with her thoughtful gestures. Outside of work, she enjoys embarking on adventures with her husband in their camper, relishing the simple joys of life.

When asked about advice for families struggling with the decision to place their loved ones in care, Sue offers words of reassurance. She emphasises that Engelberg is not just a care facility but a loving community where residents find companionship, care, and safety. “When they come into our care home, they join our family,” Sue says, reflecting the ethos of warmth and support that defines Engelberg.
