At Allt Y Mynydd in Wales, we have the privilege of caring for many remarkable residents, each with their unique stories, talents, and passions. Among them is Hazel Gadd, a woman whose life has been a rich tapestry of creativity, resilience, and a deep love for her Welsh heritage.
A Passion for Rugby and Poetry
Hazel is from South Wales, where the love of rugby runs deep. The sport has always been a significant part of her life, not just as a spectator but as a mother who raised two sons who played the "friendly game."
Hazel has a deep love for poetry, she discussed her favourite poem, "When Just the Tide Went Out," by the beloved Welsh poet and singer Max Boyce. This poignant piece, which resonated deeply with many during the COVID-19 pandemic, captures the quiet strength and endurance of people during challenging times.
For Hazel, the poem’s words hold a special meaning. The lines:
‘And dreams like that sustain me ‘til these darkest times have passed
And chase away the shadows no caring night should cast
But times like this can shine a light as hardship often can
To see the best in people and the good there is in man
And I remember Swansea with nobody about
The shops were closed like Sunday and just the tide went out
And I remember Mumbles with the harbour in its keep
And the fishing boats at anchor that trawl the waters deep
And I heard the seabirds calling as the gulls all wheeled about
But all the town was sleeping now and just the tide went out
And when these days are over and memories remain
When children painted Rainbows and the sun shone through the rain
And the doctors and the nurses who stretchered all the pain
And I hope the carers never see a time like this again’
These words, especially, remind her of the struggles and strength shown by everyone during the pandemic, especially within care homes like ours.
A Poet at Heart
Hazel’s love for poetry goes beyond being an admirer—she is a poet herself. One of her proudest moments was when she sent one of her poems to Max Boyce, and he responded with words of appreciation, expressing how much he enjoyed her work and wishing her all the best. This acknowledgement from one of her heroes was a moment of immense joy for Hazel.
Her poem, "Care Home Granny," is a lively and heart-warming tribute to her love for rugby and her Welsh roots. It beautifully weaves her memories and experiences into verses that capture the spirit of camaraderie, the joy of singing with friends, and the pride of watching Welsh rugby legends.

A Life Full of Creativity and Teaching
Hazel’s love for writing is just one of the many creative outlets she has embraced throughout her life. Though she once expressed herself through painting and drawing, she now channels her artistic energy into writing, which she affectionately calls "painting with words."
Her life has been one of vibrant creativity. At the young age of 19, Hazel became a nurse, a role that speaks to her caring nature. Later, she moved to Hertfordshire, where she spent 25 years teaching primary school children in Welwyn Garden City. Teaching, she says, was the best thing she ever did. Her passion for nurturing young minds left a lasting mark on the lives of many children.
Hazel also pursued her love for music and performance. A trained singer, she performed comic operas like those of Gilbert & Sullivan, gracing the stage at the Alban Theatre. Every Easter, she would put on a show, delighting audiences with her talent and humour.
A New Chapter at Allt Y Mynydd
When Hazel's health declined and she could no longer live independently, she made the decision to move to Allt Y Mynydd in January 2024. Although she can no longer walk, she remains full of life and continues to inspire those around her. Hazel has found happiness and comfort in our community, describing Allt Y Mynydd as a "very caring home."
Her journey to Allt Y Mynydd marks the beginning of a new chapter, one where she continues to express her creativity, share her love for Welsh culture, and inspire us all with her resilience and warmth. We are honoured to have Hazel as part of our home, and we look forward to the many more stories, poems, and moments of joy that we will share together.
At Allt Y Mynydd, we believe in celebrating the lives of our residents, each of whom brings a unique and valuable story to our community. Hazel Gadd’s story is one of many that remind us of the richness of life, the importance of creativity, and the power of resilience.
